If you are thinking about getting a breast augmentation, there is a good chance you already know what type of look you are going for or the things that you want to change. However, the next steps might not feel so easy for you as you try to navigate the best options for you.

Of course, licensed professionals will be sure to give you a thorough rundown of everything you need to know, but it is always best to do your own research prior to a consultation.

After all – it is your body!

There are two main implant solutions, and in this piece, you can learn about the pros and cons of each so you can make an informed decision.

What Are Breast Implants?

Saline and Silicone Breast Implants (1)

Breast implants are essentially sacks of fluid that are inserted into the chest/breast area to create a different look. This could be to change the shape of a breast or the size. There are many reasons why people opt to get a breast augmentation, and often the procedures are different even if they are heading towards a similar goal. All bodies are different, which means every patient needs to be treated individually with their own body and goals in mind.

The main thing to remember is to always go to a trusted, licensed professional for a Newport Beach breast augmentation consultation.

Saline Implants

Saline implants have been around the longest and date back to the ’60s! The implant is essentially a silicone ‘pouch’ which is filled with saline fluid (sterile salt water). The pouch is inserted first into the body and then filled up after, which allows for a smaller incision site and minimal scarring.

There are a few downsides to opting for saline implants, which include noticeable texture under the skin (such as water rippling), feeling ‘sloshing’ in the chest, and the risk of them leaking into the body. That being said, if the implants do leak, the body is able to absorb the water and discard it naturally with no damage to the body. Saline implants are also often cheaper than silicone.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are round pouches of silicone that are also filled with silicone too. This synthetic material is good at imitating the feel of human fat, which can make this option feel more natural over saline. Silicone implants also offer more of a choice when it comes to size, shape, and firmness, which can give you a more customizable experience. While they do look more natural and can give you more flexibility when it comes to your desired outcome, the body cannot get rid of silicone naturally. So, if the implant were to rupture, the problem could cause infection or even toxicity.

An MRI scan every three years is suggested to keep an eye on things, especially as these ruptures can also go unnoticed and wreak havoc on your body silently.

If you are not sure about which is best for you, your surgeon should be, and feel free to ask as many questions as you need!
